Firearms Organizations
A Girl & A Gun (AG&AG) – This is the largest women’s only shooting group in the United States with over 8,000 members and 530+ chapters all over the country. There are several chapters in Houston and I am Facilitator of the League City Chapter which meets at Best shot Range and Shoot Point Blank. This all women shooting league is a wealth of sisterhood for women shooters. Follow their newsfeed that continually posts articles on training, gear, conceal carry, competition and many other topics. I am a member and Facilitator and have found many good friends through this league. I love A Girl & A Gun!! Come to our local chapter “League City” events that are held each month. “Girls Night Out” is the 2nd Thursday evening at 6:30 at Shoot Point Blank in Webster; and the first Sunday evening at Best Shot Range. We get the range to ourselves. ALL LADIES ARE WELCOME!!
USCCA = Join More Than 590,000 Fellow Responsible Gun Owners to Get Lifesaving Education, Industry-Leading Training, and Self-Defense Liability Insurance.
Gun Owners of America – Gun Owners of America (GOA) is a non-profit lobbying organization formed in 1975 to preserve and defend the Second Amendment rights of gun owners. GOA sees firearms ownership as a freedom issue.
NRA – With the current anti-gun culture of today, now more than ever it’s important to support an organization that’s sole purpose is to safe guard the Second Amendment for all. NRA is also considered the leader in establishing firearm training standards. Their website is extensive, and there’s a wealth of training opportunities and articles.
Texas State Rifle Association – Is a strong voice in the state of Texas regarding your rights with firearms and their use. Membership provides the advantage of being informed of national and state firearms and Second Amendment issues.
Local Shooting Ranges
Texas Gun Club, League City – This new range/store has 17 shooting lanes, fully equipped store, training classes, a full time on site gunsmith, monthly competitions, memberships, and special events. It’s the highest rated gun range in the Houston area. I highly recommend going out and meeting the staff and enjoying their ranges.
Galveston Rifle & Pistol Club – A nice private outdoor shooting range that offers USPSA matches each month in Galveston.
Best Shot – Family-owned facility providing an indoor shooting range, educational classes & retail products. Best Shot range is also a host range for the League City Chapter of A Girl & A Gun.
Texas City Municipal Range – The Texas City Municipal Shooting Range is an all-weather range with 28 shooting stations for all legal caliber rifles and 23 stations for handguns. It’s a public outdoor range.
Firearms Training
A Girl & A Gun Women’s Shooting League – Each chapter has excellent Certified Instructors and training and AG&AG offers the National Conference each year to members that is 3 to 4 days of training. I highly recommend conference, it’s for everyone, brand new shooters to advanced competition shooters. There is something for everyone.
AG & AG Women’s Instructional Clinics – This is classroom and range instruction for women with different events and topics each month. Always the 3rd Wednesday of each month and you do NOT have to be a member to join us. So come out and meet the ladies. Some past topics have been learning to shoot one handed, Situational Awareness, Purse Carry, Vehicle Self Defense, and fun shooting drills and targets.
Louka Tactical Training – LouAnn Hamblin is one of the finest firearms instructors in the country. She offers offers law enforcement, instructor training and civilian firearms training of all kinds around the country. She has pages of credentials and years of experience. Any class you take with LouAnn and her team, you can be assured the techniques and skills are applicable for use. I can’t recommend LouKa Tactical enough.
Tatiana Whitlock – Tatiana is the Training Director for A Girl & A Gun and also teaches classes all around the country. She has a true gift for teaching and her classes are for new gun owners as well as experienced shooters. I have taken almost every class she offers and highly recommend her.
KR Training – Since 1991, KR Training has been offering high quality, affordable firearms and self-defense courses. They are the oldest and largest firearms training school in Central Texas. They have an 88 acre range located in Lee County. I have taken lots of classes from Karl Rehn and he has a whole slew of classes I want to take with him. Take a look at his website, he has multiple national level instructors that come and offer classes and it’s just right down the road here in Texas. Sign up for his newsletters and posts.
Babes with Bullets – I have attended this camp and highly recommend it. It is an all women training camp. The instructors are world class shooters and instructors.
Rangemaster – Rangemaster Firearms Training Services was founded by Tom and Lynn Givens to offer comprehensive personal defense training across the country and abroad. I have taken several classes with Mr. Givens and I consider him one of the best instructors in the country. His yearly “Tac-Con” is a excellent 3 day conference of lectures and range instruction from some of the best in the country. Sign up for his monthly Rangemaster newsletter.
Massad Ayoob Group = The MAG 40 is an intense, four-day, 40-hour immersion course in the “rules of engagement” for armed law-abiding private citizens. Excellent class that truly covers the legal aspect of carrying a firearm along with the range training to be a responsibly armed citizen. I’ve taken this and highly recommend it to anyone that is a LTC holder.
Citizens Safety Academy = If you live around the Tennessee area, these guys are excellent. They are dedicated to educating the public on effective mindset, personal safety, and responsible firearms ownership. We offer these services without regard to culture, creed, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or political persuasion, because every law-abiding human being has a right to personal security.
USCCA Online Academy – This website offers online courses, links to in-person training, and even a cell phone App for training on the go, and also a “Reciprocity” App for when you travel. All kinds of various courses, videos, and checklists are available.
NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Online Course – This is a great way to learn the basics (Fundamentals) of pistol shooting at your own pace in your home. Follow this online class up with a private lesson with me or taking my Pistol Skills 1 class puts what you learned on paper into action by learning to shoot a pistol.
Dark Angel Medical – I took this 2 day course and highly recommend it. “Direct Action Response Training” fills a niche between military self-aid/buddy care training and civilian EMS training and is geared towards those with little to no medical training or background. Excellent hands on training that you hopefully will never need but will be glad you did when help is minutes away.
Also on the medical training front = I highly recommend the “Stop The Bleed” program, CPR with AED class, USCCA’s Emergency First-Aid Fundamentals, and Texas Law Shield’s Trauma class. All excellent ways to prepare you for medical emergencies.
Firearms Equipment and Stores
Triple T Holsters – This family owned business in Kemah makes awesome custom holsters that are guaranteed for life. I’ve had a tour of the shop and seen how Robert makes his holsters. He does a great job discussing with someone new the various ways to carry to fit YOUR lifestyle, and goes out of his way with little things to make your holster comfortable and lasting. Robert doesn’t skimp on the materials and any holster you get is safe and completely covers the trigger and trigger guard. (A must have for any holster.) If your new to the carry life style go out to his shop with your pistol and he will take the time to work with you to get the right holster for you.
Sabre Red Pepper Spray – If you have taken a class with me you know how much I love pepper spray. There are so many reasons WE ALL should carry pepper spray. This Sabre Red OC spray I highly recommend because “Crossfire” brand will spray even if the canister is upside down. If you can’t find my first choice of the Crossfire get any Sabre Red brand.
POM Pepper Spray – This is another excellent OC pepper spray. This one is perfect for you keychain and/or to attach to your purse with a “quick release” so it’s with you all the time.
Gun Goddess – An excellent place to get those necessary and maybe not so necessary shooting items. I have purchased a lot of items through the years here. This woman owned business has an excellent record for customer service too. I have a Discount Code for all my students.
Phlster Holsters – Jon Hauptman is one of the most knowledgeable people in the country on how to get a holster to work for any person regardless of their shape/weight/size. Spend some time on the website and learn how to effectively CONCEAL your carry options. I am currently using the Enigma system which is a gamechanger for conceal carry.
Self-Defense Insurance Companies
USCCA – Helps responsible citizens prepare for what happens before, during and after an act of lawful self-defense. They also offer levels of training with the insurance along with a monthly magazine.
Online Firearms Information
Active Response Training – I highly recommend you sign up for his newsletters and blogs. Greg posts a variety of articles on firearms, training and equipment, drills, self defense and many many others. I post a lot of his articles on my Facebook page. His “Weekend Knowledge Dump” that goes out every Friday has a wealth of articles. You can spend days going through his writings and learn a lot from him.
Tactical Professor – Claude Werner is a “Thinker” and posts some excellent blogs and articles. I recommend all the electronic books he’s written and signing up for his blogs too.
Cornered Cat – Kathy Jackson has a wealth of information on all things firearms. You can spend days scrolling through her website. She uses items in the news to turn them into teachable moments and is considered one of the best instructors in the country. I highly recommend her book; “The Cornered Cat: A Woman’s Guide to Conceal Carry“
Active Self Protection – These are real life situations that are caught on video that are used to give excellent commentary/feedback on what you could/should do if you find yourself in a similar situation. WARNING – some of these videos can be hard to watch but they give you a warning.
Sheepdog Mamas Facebook page – This is an excellent resource for all those moms (and dads) that want to carry and protect their children. The information in the “files” section and questions that are posted can help parents with everyday life as a family that wants to have a safe firearm carry lifestyle. The admin for this group, Melody Lauer is a well respected instructor that offers training around the country. So go take a look.
